چکیده
Do Peers Affect Student Achievement? Evidence from Canada Using Group Size Variation We provide the first empirical application of a new approach proposed by Lee (2007) to estimate peer effects in a linear-in-means model. This approach allows to control for grouplevel unobservables and to solve the reflection problem. We investigate peer effects in student achievement in Mathematics, Science, French and History in Quebec secondary schools. We estimate the model using maximum likelihood and instrumental variables methods. We find evidence of peer effects. The endogenous peer effect is positive, when significant, and some contextual peer effects matter. Using calibrated Monte Carlo simulations, we find that high dispersion in group sizes helps with potential issues of weak identification. JEL Classification: C31, I20, Z13

Student Achievement and University Classes: Effects of Attendance, Size, Peers, and Teachers We examine the empirical determinants of student achievement in higher education, focusing our attention on its small-group teaching component (classes or seminars) and on the role of attendance, number of students per class, peers, and tutors. The empirical analysis is based on longitudinal administrat...
متن کاملSchool Resources and Student Achievement: A Review of Cross-Country Economic Research
How do school resources affect students’ academic achievement? This chapter provides a survey of economists’ work on the effect of expenditure and class size on student achievement using different international student achievement tests, with a particular focus on the use of quasi-experimental research methods to address challenges of the identification of causal effects. Overall, the internati...

Identification of Peer Effects with Missing Peer Data: Evidence from Project STAR This paper studies peer effects on student achievement among first graders randomly assigned to classrooms in Tennessee’s Project STAR. The analysis uses previously unexploited pre-assignment achievement measures available for 60 percent of students. Data are not missing at random, making identification challengin...
متن کاملIdentifying Distributional Effects of Teachers and Peers in Nonseparable Models∗
This paper looks at the effects of teacher and peer characteristics on student achievement in the STAR Project conducted in Tennessee in the late 1980s. As in standard linear models, the proposed approach considers two types of unobservables: school-specific effects and idiosyncratic disturbances. It generalizes previous empirical research by allowing both effects to enter the structural functi...
متن کاملPeers, Neighborhoods and Immigrant Student Achievement: Evidence from a Placement Policy
Peers, Neighborhoods and Immigrant Student Achievement: Evidence from a Placement Policy Immigrants typically perform worse than other students in the OECD countries. We examine to what extent this is due to the population characteristics of the neighborhoods that immigrants grow up in. We address this issue using a governmental refugee placement policy which provides exogenous variation in the...
